One Laptop, Every Key: Inside the Aokigahara Infostealer
Security teams had already flagged AI tools as a governance concern. In Secure.com’s practitioner interviews, 57% raised governance concerns, a directional read from a small panel. A new stealer has turned that worry into an incident with a hash list.
What Happened?
Researchers published a teardown of an infostealer called Aokigahara on October 23. It does the usual stealer work: browsers, wallets, password managers, VPN configs, email. Then it runs a module built only for AI tooling. That module hunts credential and session files from AI chat apps and coding assistants, along with code editor databases, Git credential files, SSH private keys, and cloud configuration caches. A second research team tracked the same family earlier in 2026 under a shorter name. Older samples did not look for AI files at all. The AI module was added recently.
What Is the Impact?
A stolen session token doesn’t require your password. It can open private conversations, uploaded files, and source code, run up charges on a paid plan, or be resold. Pair that with the Git and cloud credentials from the same upload, and one laptop becomes repository access.
Why This One Reads Differently
Stealer families copy whatever works. Wallet theft spread across the market in about a year, and the AI module follows the same pattern: a high-value file that almost nobody treats as a credential. The malware also checks the keyboard layout and interface language, quits on a list of regions, and then watches for sandbox and debugger activity. Modules switched off in the config stay compiled into the file, so a quiet sample can still be a loaded one.
Indicators of Compromise
Aokigahara infostealer: published indicators
Published indicators for the Aokigahara stealer, also tracked as Aoki, with earlier builds reported under the names Kamidere and Stygian. Network indicators are defanged. Refang them before loading into your tooling.

Indicators as published by the research teams tracking this family. Treat AI session files and cloud credential caches as in scope for every stealer investigation from here on.
Who Is in the Blast Radius
Anyone running AI assistants on an endpoint that also holds cloud keys. That is most engineering teams now, and most of those tools were installed without a ticket. Service providers carry it twice over, because one compromised analyst workstation can reach several client environments. The exposure is widest exactly where visibility is thinnest.
How to Avoid This
- Revoke sessions first, rotate keys second, reset passwords last
- Treat AI auth files like SSH keys, not like browser cookies
- Write down what source code and client data may go into AI tools
- Hunt for processes reading credential stores on developer machines
- Run the whole cleanup from a clean device, never the infected one
Find It Before the Stealer Does
Credential sprawl on developer laptops is grunt work nobody owns, and it stays unowned until something like this lands. Secure.com puts AI Teammates on that work, inside the scope and approvals your team sets.
- The Red AI Teammate attacks your own environment and shows which exposed credentials are actually usable, not just present
- The SOC AI Teammate triages stealer alerts with full case context instead of handing analysts raw noise
- The Cloud Security AI Teammate finds exposed keys and misconfigured access, then carries remediation through to verification
- Consequential actions pause at a human approval gate you define, so nothing moves without authority
- Every action and approval is logged, so you can prove what was revoked, when, and by whom
Your team sets the rules. AI teammates do the work. Attack. Harden. Prove. Repeat.
